U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson

Keynote Speaker

Simpson is a former U.S. senator who co-chaired the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform with U.S. Sen. Erskine Bowles and served as one of the 10 bipartisan members on the respected Iraq Study Group chaired by U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton and U.S. Rep. Jim Baker. He is a partner in the Cody firm of Simpson, Kepler and Edwards, the Cody division of the Denver firm of Burg Simpson Eldredge, Hersh & Jardine, PC.

Simpson pre-served on numerous corporate and non-profit boards and still travels the country presenting speeches and lectures on a variety of subjects. He authored a book, Right in the Old Gazoo: A Lifetime of Scrapping with the Press, which chronicles his personal experiences and views of the news media. His biography, Shooting from the Lip, was published in September 2011. From 1997 to 2000, Simpson was a visiting lecturer and for two years, the director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. During fall 2000 he returned to his Alma Mater, the University of Wyoming, as a visiting lecturer in the Political Science Department and co-taught class entitled, "Wyoming's Political Identity: Its History and Its Politics," proving to be one of the most popular classes offered at UW. David Alberts is a partner in the New York office of Mayer Brown, where he focuses his practice on insurance and reinsurance matters. David’s work for the life insurance industry includes corporate/M&A, regulatory, contract wording, insurance finance (including life and annuity reserve financing), collateral arrangements and credit enhancements, and new product development. He regularly advises on multijurisdictional and cross-border transactions and regulatory issues, including credit for reinsurance laws, risk transfer regulations, permissible investment under insurance investment laws and related collateralization requirements. In the past few years, he has represented numerous insurers in a steady stream of highly structured life insurance reserve financing transactions. David is a long time advisor to the ACLI Reinsurance Committee and is a member of the Association of Life Insurance Counsel.

Spencer Alridge

Spencer Alridge is Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at SCOR Global Life Americas. Currently, he is responsible for all legal and compliance matters for the Latin American and Canadian operations of SCOR. Prior to his work with the international businesses, he had primary responsibility for all litigation, arbitration and dispute remediation and resolution worldwide. Spencer provides the life reinsurance representation for SGLA to both the ACLI and the RAA. Before joining Transamerica, he spent 10 years in private practice, concentrating on litigation of insurance, employment, bankruptcy and commercial matters. Spencer received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and his J.D. from George Washington University.

Richard J. Bielen, MBA, CPA

Mr. Bielen is vice chairman and chief financial officer of Protective Life Corporation. He joined Protective Life in 1991 with responsibility for the company’s Securities portfolio, became chief investment officer and Treasurer in 2002 and has served as vice chairman and chief cinancial officer since 2007.

He is a certified public accountant and serves on the boards of The United Way of Central Alabama, The Alabama Trust Fund, Children’s Health System and Cluff Research Fund. He earned a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science degree from New York University.

Jeff Boland

Mr. Boland is Chief Risk Officer of Athene Holding Ltd., a Bermuda-based holding company for the Athene family of companies, whose core business is fixed annuities in the growing retirement services market. He received a PhD in pure mathematics from the University of Michigan, served as an assistant professor of mathematics and authored research publications, and has worked in risk management within the capital markets and reinsurance industry for many years.

Lawrence S. Carson, FSA, MAAA

Mr. Carson is senior vice president and chief pricing actuary, Global Financial Solutions for RGA Reinsurance Company. He is responsible for overseeing all aspects of pricing for this worldwide business unit, which focuses on asset-intensive, capital-motivated, and bulk longevity reinsurance transactions.

He received an A.B. (cum laude) degree in Mathematics from Harvard University. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. He has also served in various roles with the SOA’s Reinsurance Section Council, was a member of the Academy’s Life Reinsurance Work Group, and has spoken at numerous industry meetings.

Mike DeKoning, FSA, FCIA, MAAA

Mr. DeKoning joined Munich American Reassurance Company in January 2008 as president and chief executive officer. Mike is responsible for all of the U.S. life reinsurance business for Munich Re, including individual life and disability, group life and disability, and long term care. He directs all aspects of the business and sits on the Munich American Reasurance Company board of directors as well as the board of directors of LifePlans, Inc., one of the largest providers of long term care insurance underwriting, claims and administration services.

He is a past board member and chairman of the Audit Committee of MIB Group and is currently on the board of the American Council of Life Insurers and the Educational Foundation of the Department of Risk Management and Insurance of Georgia State University.

Doug French, FSA, FCA, FIAA, MAAA

Mr. French is the managing principal of the Insurance and Actuarial Advisory Services practice of Ernst & Young LLP’s Financial Services Offices. Mr. French is based in New York City. He has spent over 28 years in actuarial consulting. He has worked on engagements in the United States, Mexico, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. His clients include banks as well as insurance companies.

He is a frequent speaker at industry seminars on topics such as enterprise risk management, capital management, retirement income, solvency II and solvency modernization. Mr. French is a co-author of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia’s sessional paper “Margin on Services Reporting: The Financial Implications,” which was the Institute of Actuaries of Australia 1993 Parker Prize Winner.

Eric S. Henderson, FSA, MAAA

Mr. Henderson is senior vice president and leader of the Individual Products & Solutions segment of Nationwide Financial. Prior to this position, Henderson was senior vice president of the Individual Investments Group. He was elected to his current position in October of 2011, making him accountable for the financial health of Nationwide’s individual annuity and life segments representing over $60 billion in assets and reserves, and $120 billion of insurance in-force.

Eric holds Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in mathematics from The Ohio State University and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. Eric also serves on the Thurber House Board of Trustees.

Daniel J. Houston

Mr. Houston is president, Retirement, Insurance and Financial Services with the Principal Financial Group®. He is responsible for the company’s U.S. asset accumulation businesses, including the retirement, mutual funds and annuity lines of business. He’s also responsible for the company’s U.S. insurance solutions businesses, including individual life and specialty benefits, as well as, distribution channels supporting all units.

He’s a member of several boards, including Employee Benefits Research Institute (EBRI). Houston has appeared before the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging to discuss the importance of educating the workforce about the financial needs in retirement. Houston also joined the joint forum of U.S. Senate Committees on Finance and Health, Education, Labor and Pensions to discuss “Private-Sector Retirement Savings Plans: What Does the Future Hold?”

Mark E. Konen, FSA, MAAA

Mr. Konen has over 30 years of experience in the insurance industry. He is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the University of Nebraska. Hugh McCormick is a partner in the New York office of Duane Morris LLP, a law firm of more than 700 lawyers with offices in 12 states, as well as London, Singapore and Viet Nam. He advises domestic and international insurance and reinsurance companies on tax, regulatory, and corporate matters arising in connection with reinsurance, M&A and securitization transactions.

Eileen McDonnell, MBA

Eileen C. McDonnell is president and chief executive officer of The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 2012, Ms. McDonnell was named vice chair of the Insurance Federation of Pennsylvania and to the Board of The American Council of Life Insurers. Previously, she was president of New England Financial, a wholly owned subsidiary of Met Life, and senior vice president of the Guardian Life Insurance Company.

A graduate of Molloy College, Rockville Centre, N.Y., Ms. McDonnell majored in mathematics and computer science, and received an honorary doctor oflaws (LL.D.) degree in 2011. She earned her MBA in finance and investments from Adelphi University, Garden City, N.Y.

Bill Moore

Mr. Moore has over 30 years of underwriting experience and a diverse background in managing risk in various market niches including financial institution, brokerage, direct response and captive agencies. He has split his career between reinsurance and direct writing companies.

He has managed underwriting research and development, medical, claims and risk management functions in addition to new business and underwriting. He has experience in establishing underwriting philosophy and guidelines, preferred criteria to meet product objectives and managing automated underwriting systems.

Kevin Oldani

Mr. Oldani joined Hannover Life Re America in April 2009. At HLR America, Kevin is responsible for the overall management of the underwriting department. He has over 30 years of underwriting experience, including management of ING Re’s underwriting department, training and mentoring on underwriting issues, conducting client visits/audits, managing client relationships, and underwriting management of the COLI/BOLI line of business.

He is a member of AHOU and the Rocky Mountain Society of Home Office Underwriters. Kevin is past president of The Southeastern Home office Underwriters Association, Past Chairman of the COLI Directors meeting and the executive committee for the Impaired Risk Underwriting Association.

Maurice A. Perkins

Maurice Perkins is Senior Vice President of Federal Relations and joined the American Council of Life Insurers in 2005.

Mr. Perkins was promoted to the position of Senior Vice President in 2011. Prior to joining ACLI’s Federal Relations Department, Mr. Perkins served almost five years as a Professional Staff Member in the U.S. Senate. He first worked on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee - then to Chairman Richard Shelby (R-AL) on the Senate Banking Committee.

Mr. Perkins had responsibility for legislation regarding national security issues, trade, and international financial institutions. He worked closely with U.S. Department of Treasury and Department of State officials and aided Presidential nominees through the Senate confirmation process.

At ACLI, Mr. Perkins helps to manage a team of federal lobbyists on issues covering tax, financial services, and retirement security issues of importance to the life insurance industry on Capitol Hill, including tax reform efforts, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act, the Pension Protection Act, and reinsurance issues.

A native of Miami, Florida, Maurice has a Bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College in upstate New York and a Masters Degree from Columbia University.

Nardeep Sangha

Mr. Sangha joined Swiss Re in November 2011 as global head of Life & Health Risk Transformation. He joined from Deutsche Bank where he was a Managing Director in Global Rates and the CEO / CIO of Abbey Life. His professional qualifications include: Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute and Associate Member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers.

Upon graduating from Nottingham University with a BSC (Hons) in Mathematics with statistics, he joined the insurance consulting division of Watsons. In 1993 he moved to Midland Personal Financial Services where he qualified as an Actuary before beginning his capital markets career at Sumitomo Bank prior to joining Deutsche Bank in 2000.

He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business in 1982 with a B.S. in Economics. He and his wife Teresa reside in Orlando, Florida.

Philip Smalley MD, FRCPC

Dr. Philip Smalley is the vice president and medical director for RGA International Corporation and managing director of the Longer Life Foundation. He is currently responsible for medical research and assisting in product development.

He is an internal medicine specialist with more than 20 years of insurance medicine experience. He received his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1986. Prior to joining RGA International, he consulted for many direct insurance companies and also practiced medicine at a University of Toronto affiliated teaching hospital. He is also the Past President of the Canadian Life Insurance Medical Officers Association.

Brad Smith, FSA, MAAA

Mr. Smith joined Milliman & Robertson, Inc., now known as Milliman, in April 1986 to open the life/health practice in Dallas. His practice involved all aspects of life and health insurance including insurance industry mergers and acquisitions, product pricing and financial statement preparation. He served as a member of Milliman's Board of Directors from May 1996 to May 1999. In May 2000 he was elected to the position of Chairman of Milliman, and continues to serve in that capacity.

He is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries (SOA), a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and a fellow of the Life Management Institute (LOMA). He recently served as president of the SOA. He has also been an elected section council member of the following SOA sections: Financial Reporting, Marketing & Distribution, and Product Development and served as a member of the SOA’s Board of Governors, Director of Publications and chairman of the SOA’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Neil Sprackling

Mr. Sprackling is president of Swiss Re’s Life & Health US Business and a member of the firm’s Americas Management Team. With over 27 years’ reinsurance experience spanning the UK, Spain, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand, Neil’s background includes client management, underwriting, and marketing. He managed Mercantile & General’s Spanish branch office prior to moving to Australia in 1997 to join Swiss Re.

Neil has led various business and industry programs on behalf of Swiss Re in Australia. Foremost among these is the protection gap initiative addressing the issue of underinsurance, and the extensive review of the income protection market.

Michael E. Sproule, FSA, MAAA

Mr. Sproule is executive vice president and chief financial officer for New York Life Insurance Company overseeing: the Office of the Chief Actuary; the Controller’s Department; Mergers & Acquisitions; Financial Planning Analysis and Budgets; Rating Agency relationships; the Office of Risk Management; the Tax Department; and, the Treasury Department. He became a member of the Executive Management Committee in May 2002.

With 40 years of industry experience, Mr. Sproule joined New York Life in 1999 as Senior Vice President in charge of Mergers & Acquisitions. Mr. Sproule received a bachelor’s degree in math and physics and an MBA in finance and marketing from the University of Toronto. In addition, he is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

Mr. Stroup holds a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and an M.B.A. from the Columbia University Graduate School of Business.

Darryl Wagner, FSA, MAAA

Mr. Wagner is based in the Hartford office of Deloitte Consulting LLP and serves as National Practice Leader for Deloitte Consulting’s U.S. Life Actuarial Practice. He has more than 25 years of experience in the life and health actuarial field, including involvement in statutory and GAAP valuation and financial reporting, mergers and acquisitions, demutualizations and GAAP conversions for both direct writers and reinsurers. Darryl has extensive international experience, having served clients on six continents, and is the IFRS insurance consulting practice leader for Deloitte Consulting.

Darryl is a frequent speaker at industry functions and has participated in AICPA deliberations various insurance financial reporting and valuation subjects. He currently serves on the SOA Board of Directors and as Chair of the SOA’s International Committee. He is also an SOA representative to the International Actuarial Association. Darryl earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in mathematics from the University of Nebraska in 1985. Before joining Deloitte, he worked for CIGNA and Arthur Andersen, both in Hartford, CT.

David Wesley, MD

David Wesley, MD, is Vice President, Director Medical Research for SCOR Global Life Americas in Charlotte. Dr. Wesley received both his BA and his MD degrees from the University of California at San Diego. He practiced internal medicine in Syracuse, NY before joining the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York in 1985 as Senior Medical Director. Dr. Wesley went on to serve as Vice President and Chief Medical Director for National Life of Vermont; Cologne Life Re, General Re; Generali USA Life Re; and Transamerica Re.

Dr. Wesley is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Insurance Medicine. His industry activities have included numerous publications and presentations.

William J. Wheeler, MBA

Mr. Wheeler is the president of the Americas region of MetLife, Inc. As president, he oversees MetLife’s insurance and retirement businesses in the United States and Latin America.

Prior to his current role, Mr. Wheeler was executive vice president and chief financial officer at MetLife. Before joining MetLife, he was an investment banker at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. He holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and also received an A.B., from Wabash College, where he is now a member of the board of trustees.

A. Greig Woodring, FSA

Mr. Woodring is president and chief executive officer and a director of Reinsurance Group of America, Incorporated. Prior to becoming President, Greig served as Executive Vice President of General American Life Insurance Company (now GenAmerica Financial L.L.C.), in charge of all reinsurance business. His leadership and experience have been pivotal in helping to make RGA one of the world’s leading life reinsurance companies, with more than $2.5 trillion dollars of life reinsurance in force.

He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. He received a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Mathematics from the University of Michigan, a Master of Science (M.S.) in Mathematics from the University of Illinois and an M.B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis.
